The Alpine Pastures of Großarl
Holidays in the Hotel Waldhof in Großarl in the Salzburger Land
Großarl: picturesque landscape
Hiking for the whole family in a region with 40 mountain pastures
May I show you my home region? My gnome family is living in the village Großarl in the Pongau region, which is part of the Salzburger Land. The provincial capital Salzburg is only 70 km away, north of the Waldhof hotel, my home. The community of Großarl has an area of 130 km² and is a non-foggy, high-altitude area, surrounded by mountains. There is no through traffic to disturb the quietness of the mountainous region, home to 3700 inhabitants and holiday region for many dear guests in the Hotel Waldhof.
Mountain Pastures in Großarl
The valley around Großarl is called “valley of mountain pastures”. Together we can discover 250 km of signed hiking trails to 40 alpine chalets, leading us also into the area of the national park Hohe Tauern. My team of helpers at the reception of our hotel has prepared numerous hiking tips for the whole family. You will reach the starting points either by hiking taxi or by “Tuffi”, our express train.
Tradition and Ancient Customs in Großarl
The Waldhof gnomes are very proud of all traditions still maintained in Großarl. Traditional church festivals, the christmas season events of the Salzburger Bergadvent, brass music concerts and inhabitants proudly wearing their traditional costumes all show that ancient customs are still alive. I, Wurzl the gnome, am looking forward to spending these festive events together with you!

A Short History of Großarl
I would like to tell you a little bit about the history of my home village. People have inhabited this area already about 1000 years B.C. Since the year 1000 the entire area around Großarl has belonged to the rich and powerful archbishop of Salzburg. From the 15th to the 17th century mining was an important source of income. The inhabitants were wealthy and built impressive houses and many craftsmen and tradesmen settled in this area. In 1816 Großarl and most of the Salzburger Land become part of Austria. In 1960 Großarl became connected to traffic infrastructure and during the next decade it established its reputation as popular tourism area.
Since I have been living in the Hotel Waldhof, I have been looking forward every day to spending my time with the kids and parents who are on holiday in our house.
