Großarl is situated only 70 km south of the city of Salzburg with its world famous historical centre and Hohensalzburg fortress. On the other hand it is right in the middle of the Salzburger Land, which offers numerous interesting places within easy reach of the hotel.
I, Wurzl, the Waldhof gnome, would like to present you some of the most beautiful places for eventful family excursions. The Salzburger Land offers cultural highlights and breathtaking natural settings– so what are you waiting for? I visited several specially interesting places for families and kids:
01 – City of Salzburg
Distance: 70 km. Main sights and attractions in the city of the Salzburg Festival: Hohensalzburg fortress, the cathedral, St.Peter’s Abbey and Nonnberg convent, St.Peter’s cemetery and the catacombs, Getreidegasse, Mirabell palace and gardens, Hellbrunn palace and trick fountains, Salzburg Museum and Museum of Modern Art.
Sights for kids: visit the zoo near Hellbrunn palace, the Toy Museum and Hohensalzburg fortress in the historical centre of the city.
02 –Freilichtmuseum Großgmain/Open Air Museum Großgmain
Distance: 70 km. Stroll along a panoramic trail and experience 600 years of rural history and culture in Salzburg. On an area of 500.000 m² old farmhouses, mills, craftsmen’s workshops, brewery, school, blacksmith’s workshop, shop, inn, tractors and agricultural equipment from all regions of the Salzburger Land are exhibited.
Special advice for kids: “House of Sounds” (in an ancient farmhouse authentic sounds from a farm can be heard); water playground, horse-drawn carriage ride.
03 – Salzkammergut
The Salzkammergut comprises ten regions in three different Austrian provinces. It stands out due to its remarkably beautiful landsacpe: lakes and mountains and an ancient culture and settlement history. Must see: Altaussee and Altaussee lake (with a panoramic trail around the lake), Loser mountain offering a panoramic view of the region, St.Wolfgang with its famous hotel “Weißes Rössl” (boat roundtrip on the lake), Bad Ischl (former summer resort of the Austrian emperor and health resort), Hallstadt, city of the Celts.
Special attractions for kids: boat trip on lake Wolfgang, salt pits in Altaussee and Hallstadt.
04 – Salt Pit Hallein
Distance: 59 km. Open all-the-year. You enter by Grubenhunt, the traditional pitmen’s cart; guided tour through the underground pit, in which salt has been mined since Celtic times (1000 b.C.). Main attractions: long wooden slides, on which you dash down from one gallery to the next, raft ride on the salt lake. Afterwards you can visit the Celtic village, the Celtic Museum and the Silent Night Museum in Hallein. This is a real highlight on rainy or very hot days!
Special attractions for kids: guided tours for children in the Salt Worlds Hallein, tour through the pit for kids from 4 years up only! Dry luge run Dürrnberg.
05 – Salzachöfen
Distance: 52 km. The “Salzachöfen” are the watergap of the river Salzach, a gorge surmounted by high craggy walls. Worth seeing is the “dome” and the deeply cut gorge. This eventful hiking tour through forests and gorge is appropriate for the whole family. Near the restaurant at the summit of Pass Lueg starts a culture trail about the history of the region.
Special attraction for kids: The Lammer island is a wild and romatic natural bathing site.
06 – Eisriesenwelt Werfen - largest ice-cave on our planet
Distance: 33 km. The largest ice-cave on our planet is open between May 1st and end of October and is a highlight for the whole family. You can reach the entrance of the cave by cable car or walk up (20 minutes). The cave can be visited only by taking a guided tour. Please note: Temperature inside is low (around freezing point), so don’t forget warm clothing and heavy boots, cap and gloves!
Special attraction for kids: suited for kids over 5 years; a really unique natural phenomenon! Exciting ascent by cablecar.
07 –Hohenwerfen Fortress
Distance: 33 km. This impressive fortress towers over the Salzach valley. The fortification, dating back to the 11th century, is a must-see during a family holiday in Salzburg. Castle tours, exhibitions and special programmes; falcon house with daily flight shows, medieval knight’s tournaments, knight’s banquets, during summer season special evening programme.
Special attractions for kids: medieval festivities in summer, discovering a well-preserved medieval fortress, mystic fairytale tours, romantic christmas market.
08 – Bischofsmütze Filzmoos
Distance: 52 km. The Bischofsmütze is a prominent mountain peak, landmark, power place and climbers’ paradise in the region around the village Filzmoos. For non-climbers: visit the pilgrimage church Filzmoos and the “Filzmooser Kindl” (a miraculous gothic image of Jesus child).
Highlight for parents: enjoy the haute cuisine of Johanna Maier, the only woman in the champion’s league of top chefs, in the Gourmet Hotel Hubertushof.
Special attractions for kids: family hiking tours and snack in one of the mountain chalets, Dachstein “Sky Walk” and “Dachstein Ice Palace”, a cave inside the glacier near Ramsau.
09 – Dachstein
Distance: 66 km to Ramsau at the foot of the Dachstein. The majestic Dachstein mountains are a favourite holiday resort for hikers and for winter sports fans. The high plateau of Ramsau am Dachstein is a centre for Nordic winter sports. Special highlight: cross-country skiing and ice skating on Dachstein glacier.
Special attractions for kids: the Dachstein caves, which can be reached via the village Obertraun (91 km from Großarl). You reach the starting point for the tours through ice cave and Mammoth cave by cable car. Eerie, breathtaking adventure for the whole family.
10 – Jägersee
Distance: 35 km, 10 km from the village of Wagrain. Idyllically situated mountain lake, beautiful landscape for walks and playing at the water. Peaceful family excursion for fine summer days. You can have lunch in the Gasthof Jägersee. Starting point for the hiking tour to lake Tappenkar.
Special attraction for kids: rent a boat to row across the lake and watch out for fish.
11 –Tappenkarsee/Lake Tappenkar
Distance: 36 km. Romantic hiking tour for the whole family, you need hiking equipment and hiking boots. Signed trail starting at Jägersee; duration: 2 hours. Lake Tappenkar is one of the highest and largest mountain lakes in the Alps (1.768m), has a depth of up to 50 m and is shrouded in myths and legends. Chalets offering regional food from June to October. Starting point for several hiking tours and for reaching several summits.
For kids: easy hiking tour, Lake Tappenkar is really worth while the effort!
12 – Liechtensteinklamm
Distance: 16 km. A gorge shrouded in legends near St.Johann and a spectacular natural phenomenon: white cascades are thundering down the rocks and sometimes only a small blue strip of sky is visible high above. Across bridges and through tunnels you reach the impressive waterfall at the end of one of the longests and deeply cut gorges in the Alps. Open from May till October, hiking shoes required! Inn at the entrance of the gorge.
For kids: exciting nature adventure!
13 –Health Resort Bad Gastein
Distance: 50 km. The broad, green valley of Gastein and the impressive health resort, built against the cliffside, are worth to be visited. Many beautiful hiking trails and the Felsentherme, a large spa centre, make Bad Gastein a highlight for families on rainy days or in fine weather for revitalizing after a long hiking tour.
Special attractions for kids: an adventure spa with 600 m², with numerous attractions, like interactive adventure slide, kiddie pool, rocky grotto and Fairy-Tale pool. Magnificent outdoor area.
14 – Hochkönig
Distance: Dienten am Hochkönig 40 km. The holiday region around the Hochkönig massif offers numerous hiking tours ranging from easy family hikes to challenging summit races. Visit the picturesque villages Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm. In winter this region is a paradise for skiing and snowboarding.
Special attraction for kids: watch wild animals- chamois, marmots, birds of prey. Don’t forget your binoculars!
15 – Zell am See
Distance: 54 km. Lovely little town 758 m above sea level. Historical centre for loitering and shopping. Zeller See is a beautiful swimming lake, the grassy mountains around Zell am See offer numerous hiking trails. Many sports facilities: canyoning, rafting, riding, golf, water sports. Great winter sports area for beginners as well as pros.
Special attractions for kids: adventure hikes on the Schmittenhöhe, ascent by Areitbahn cable car. Visit Kaprun storage power station.
16 –Kaprun Storage Power Station
Distance: 54 km. Continue from Zell am See in the direction of Kaprun. Spectacular ascent by bus and inclined elevator up to the power station. Guided tours from June till October, visit the “Erlebniswelt Strom & Eis”, the elecricity and ice adventure world. The turquoise water in the reservoir originates from the glacier on Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain. Impressive architecture and breathtaking nature backdrop. Hiking trails and inns near the power station.
Special attraction for kids: exciting ascent by inclined elevator, much interesting information about nature, technology, electricity and power supply set up adequately for children.
17 – Großglockner
Distance to Fusch an der Glockner-Hochalpenstraße: 53 km; up to Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe: 130 km. The most beautiful and most spectacular 48 km of high alpine road which you can find in the Alps. From Zell am See via Fusch it leads you up to an altitude of 2.369 m. After 36 bends you reach Franz-Josefs-Höhe, where a visitors’ centre presents several exhibitons. Great panoramic view of the Pasterze (glacier), Großglockner and Johannisberg.
Special attractions for kids: many interactive presentations in the visitors’ centre; the eerie story of the glacier’s formation in a multimedia presentation. And: the “Marmot Show” in the multimedia cinema.
18 – Krimml Waterfalls
Distance: 102 km. Super day trip for the whole family. 4 km of hiking trail up to Europe’s largest, spectacular waterfalls (height 380 meters), with many view points. Duration of ascent: 1 hour. Chalets, hiking trails.
Special attraction for kids: visit the “Wasser-Wunder Welt “ in Krimml, a fascinating journey through the multifaceted nature of the element water.
19 –Mauterndorf Castle
Distance: 99 km. Mauterndorf castle, a toll castle and summer residence of the archbishop of Salzburg, dating back to the 13th century, towers high over the village Mauterndorf. It offers an exciting journey back to the Middle Ages for the whole family. Knight’s banquets in the tavern, various events.
Special attractions for kids: dress up as knight, bishop or noble damsel. Special guided tours for kids and interactive event tour.
20 –Wildlife and Fun Park Ferleiten
Distance: 62 km. An interesting, eventful day trip for the whole family, especially for families with younger kids. In this wildlife park, covering an area of around 20 hectares, you will be able to encounter more than 200 alpine animals. You can perambulate the wildlife park, situated directly at the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, on comfortable paths, suited for buggies and prams (duration about an hour). Pond with benches and look-out. Nature trails with presentation boards; inn.
Special attraction for kids: Watch alpine animals at close range. Super playground!
21 –National Park Visitors’ Centre Hüttschlag
Distance: 8 km. The National Park Visitors’Centre in Hüttschlag in the Großarl valley presents lots of information about the National Park Hohe Tauern and the multifaceted flora and fauna in the forests. The National Park Hohe Tauern covers an area of 1.834 km² and is the largest protected area in the Alps. It is characterised by rural culture and untamed wilderness, and every year thousands of visitors are attracted by its numerous hiking trails and mountain chalets.
Special attraction for kids: Experience primordial forests – natural cycles in a forests, which animals live there, what functions does a forest have? Interesting information about an important topic.
